About this site

Hi, I'm Mary. I grow hostas.

Somewhere between 25 and 30 varieties live in my zone 7b garden right now. The count drifts because I keep telling myself I'm done buying and then spring catalogs happen. My favorite is Sum and Substance, and the reason is simple: it's enormous. A single mature plant can own a corner of the yard, and every visitor asks about it.

I built this finder because shopping for hostas the normal way drove me a little crazy. The information is out there, but it's scattered across registry databases built for looking up registration facts, decades-old photo archives, and listicles that all recommend the same ten plants. None of it answers the question you actually have, which sounds something like: what stays under a foot tall, tolerates some morning sun, and won't get eaten to lace by slugs? That's a filter query, not a blog post.

So this site lets you ask it that way. Pick the traits that matter for your spot, get the varieties that fit, and see where you can actually buy them. The photos are mine where I grow the plant. The trait data is compiled from public registry facts and my own experience, and I review every variety page myself before it goes up.

Two honest notes. First, some of the buy links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Details on the disclosure page. Second, deer: no hosta is deer-proof, whatever anyone tells you. Some are less preferred, and the finder says so, but a hungry deer reads no databases.

Take what helps, and happy planting.
