You can do it almost any time. Theses things are pretty hardy. There are only two times not to do it. One, is when they are flowering, as it is to much of a shock to the plant. The other time is when they are first coming out of the ground, if you break the points, they wont grow that year (but they will the next).

I started my yard with two plants 20 years ago, now I have over 200, just by splitting and separating them every year. They are pretty hard to kill.
