What are good flowers to plant in a fairly shady area in front of a grey house?

Question by sweetgirl: What are good flowers to plant in a fairly shady area in front of a grey house?
I have a space about 20 feet by about 8 feet in front of my window. It does not get very sunny because we have a big tree in the front yard. I would like to know what would grow well and what would look nice.

Azaleas, hosta, rhododendron, Astilbe, bleeding hearts, primrose, some geraniums will do well also. Lily of the Valley would make a nice ground cover, and its flowers smell very nice. Liriope is also a nice ground cover for shady areas. Lily of the Valley is invasive, though. The nice thing about azaleas is that you can get evergreen or deciduous ones…in difficult areas, the deciduous ones seem to do better. For annuals, impatiens are very good. The closer together you plant them, the taller they get. You also have to make sure they get enough water. Begonias are also good for shady areas.
