Should day lillies be trimmed back like ornamental grasses?

Question by jpn72: Should day lillies be trimmed back like ornamental grasses?
I live in MD (DC Baltimore area) and know that my ornamental grasses will grow back in the spring after cutting. I’ve seen that the hostas die out and come back in the Spring also…but day lillies? Mine are looking brown as if they’re dying back. Not sure whether to cut them in the spring or not…

I cut mine almost level with the ground in the late fall. This gets rid of all dead growth and seems to rejuvenate the plant for the spring. My Lilies grow like weeds and are VERY healthy.

This time of year, day lilies don’t care what you do to their leaves. Run the lawn mower over them, cut them to the ground, no problem. They’ll be back next year!
