There are lots of shade loving plants that are not Hostas.
I don’t know what zone Iowa is. Just go to your favorite gardening web page or gardening center and look for shade loving plants for your zone.
I love Monrovia.com for plant info.

I used to live in a very shady area for 10 years or so, so I have a pretty extensive list for you based on my experience. We are a zone 5 here too, which I’m sure is pretty much the same in Iowa. Try these:

    PERENNIALS:
    bleeding hearts
    columbine
    astilbe
    ferns
    vinca vine
    lily of the valley
    daylilies
    lupine
    oriental lilies
    lambs ear
    foxglove
    purple coneflower
    obedient plant

    ANNUALS:

    impatients
    lobelia
    polka dot flower
    pansies
    violets
    violas
    begonia
    coleus

There are more, but I highly recommend getting yourself some good books on shade loving gardening. That helped me a TON! Of course now I live in a mostly sunny area, so my gardening has to kinda start over 😉
