Some trees that like the shade are:
Dogwood
Redbud shade or sun
Sourwood
Magnolia will take some shade if not too dark. Especially Sweet Bay Magnolia and the decidious types.

Even shade plants need a certain amount of light to bloom. If its real dark, growth will be spindly, and blooms minimal.
If really dark, consider removing some of the trees lower limbs to let more light in, maybe even thinning out some of the weaker trees. This might increase the breeze around you home as well.
Also, most types of Lilies like the sun. They might grow in shade, but won’t bloom or thrive.

What do you think?

  1. Dragon says:

Camelias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas will give you height if you have an acid soil . As advised most plants need some filtered light. Perhaps you could thin out the trees above to create some increase.

Good ground covers for the area would be Lamium, violets, Mondo grass, liriope and hellebores. Mahonias may be worth a try.

My LA Hybrid lillies are flowering in virtually no sun position.
