Question by Susan E: found a white, lard like substance, about 2 cups worth next to a hosta plant. It was about 5 in in the ground?
it has no small and was partially under the dirt about 5 inches so it wasn’t dumped there. It is in a private spot so I can’t imagine anyone putting it there. I was surprised at how large it was. The scary part is my dog was licking it, that is how I found it. So far he is doing ok.
I meant, has no smell

My best guess is it was some sort of fungus or Mycelium (hosta crown rot)

try a doing a search on hosta crown rot and see if that’s what you saw
or it could of been a mushroom forming under the soil and it was waiting to come up or maybe a decomposing mushroom rotting or decaying

i was mushroom hunting after a rainfall and the sun was super hot this one species of mushroom liquefied while decaying
