Looking for suggestions for a flower garden in Minnesota?

September 29th, 2013

Question by Jen G: Looking for suggestions for a flower garden in Minnesota?
I want to put a flower garden in the yard in front of my house, but I’m not sure what I would be able to use. Since that side of the house faces the west, it doesn’t get sunlight until the afternoon. I’ve looked around at a few different green houses to get some ideas, but all I find is plants that require full sun. I would like to get flowers or small shrubs or maybe even some climbing flowers. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

I would even like to have greenery suggestions too, as flowers may not be able to grow underneath the constant shade of my cedar…Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

Question by : What plants should I plant in my garden bed?
I want a simple looking bed, with easy to take care of plants. I have a separate section of my backyard for vegetables and herbs and stuff, so I want the garden bed to look simple. What types of plants should I plant there?

It depends on where you live. I live in a desert so plants like sage, sedum, lavender, sunflowers, yarrow ect are very good and require little water.
If you live in a more humid climate, day lilies are very proliferous and look good, maybe some buck-eye daisies, astilbe, bergenia, hosta and butterfly flowers are a few good ones. Check out this web site for more ideas.

Answer by sciencegravy
Lantana wants full sun.

Shade plants are hostas, ferns, impatiens, dead nettle, azaela, toadlily, and others.

I recommend you visit your local garden center and ask them what does well in your area in shade. They’ll be able to show you lots of things.

Hostas & Slugs?

August 8th, 2013

Question by swati: Hostas & Slugs?
I planted a few hostas in my garden and the slugs seem to be feasting on them right down to their veins. Is there a humane way to get rid of slugs? I’d hate to use anything that kills them.

Read answers:

Answer by LeapingLizard
I think i remember reading in the Gardens Alive organic gardening catalog that there is some kind of slug barrier you can put around your hostas. I understand that you don’t want to kill the little slimeys but the other alternative is to put beer in a can lid and let the slugs get drunk – but then they drown as a result. Gardens Alive may also have a slug repellant that doesn’t kill them, I’m not sure. I don’t have a slug problem thank goodness. Good luck finding an alternative to killing your slugs.
