Looking for suggestions for a flower garden in Minnesota?

Sunday, September 29th, 2013

Question by Jen G: Looking for suggestions for a flower garden in Minnesota?
I want to put a flower garden in the yard in front of my house, but I’m not sure what I would be able to use. Since that side of the house faces the west, it doesn’t get sunlight until the afternoon. I’ve looked around at a few different green houses to get some ideas, but all I find is plants that require full sun. I would like to get flowers or small shrubs or maybe even some climbing flowers. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

What types of flowering plants grow best underneath a cedar tree?

Friday, September 20th, 2013

Question by Momof2: What types of flowering plants grow best underneath a cedar tree?
I have built a flower garden underneath a cedar tree in my backyard. I plan on filling it up with flower friendly soil, and planting some sort of flowers plant in it. This way I don’t have to worry about roots from the tree interfering with the roots of the flowers. What types of flowering plants will grow well underneath a cedar tree? I would even like to have greenery suggestions too, as flowers may not be able to grow underneath the constant shade of my cedar…Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

It depends on where you live. I live in a desert so plants like sage, sedum, lavender, sunflowers, yarrow ect are very good and require little water.
If you live in a more humid climate, day lilies are very proliferous and look good, maybe some buck-eye daisies, astilbe, bergenia, hosta and butterfly flowers are a few good ones. Check out this web site for more ideas.

When do groundhogs come out and what do they eat?

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Question by Brad S: When do groundhogs come out and what do they eat?
There’s one big groundhog that has a little burrow in our backyard and I’ve been trying to shoot it but the first time it got away before I could get any shots off. I just want to know when groundhogs are out the most, what they eat, and about how long it will take for the animal to make another appearance after its been scared off.
