Tuesday, January 29th, 2013Question by jim b: Disappearing Hostas?
Is it normal for Hostas to look like they have a hole where the plant used to be? We planted new Hostas last year along with the rest of our new landscaping, and it looks like the middle of the Hostas have disappeared. Is this normal?

We have some hostas in the front yard that were fine last week. This week, they have tiny little holes all over the leaves. The plants right next to them are fine (not sure what type). Any idea what kid of bugs are eating them?

Might be slugs. Nasty creatures. They leave a shiny trail that you can see.
Place a small shallow saucer of beer near the plant and leave over night. Slugs will be attracted and drown in it.

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013Question by devilishblueyes: Hostas not coming up yet?
Last year I planted some hostas here in central Indiana around the beginning late summer of early fall. I also planted a number of other perennials around the house. Most of my other perennials are starting to protrude out of the ground, but I see no evidence that my hostas are coming up. Should my hostas be coming up by now or am I a little over anxious. I’m wondering if they were killed off during winter. Does anyone know when they start protruding out of the ground. I’ve heard they are very hardy, but they are on of the few perennials that hasn’t come up yet.

You should always transplant in cooler weather when most plants are in hibernation and will not mind the shock as much. Once the hosta dies off in fall, very gently chop and dig up the portion you want to move and replant it. Good Luck!!!
