Looking for plants that do well in partial shade, preferably Miscanthus or Hosta.?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

Question by grobianischus: Looking for plants that do well in partial shade, preferably Miscanthus or Hosta.?
I’m hoping for Miscanthus sinensis variegatus but it is supposed to sag somewhat without full sun. My mother’s garden has some in a similar shady area but recieves more morning sun than my yard. I like the banding of the variegatus and zebrinus. if these wont do well in partial shade does anyone have any suggestions. From what I’ve read about Hostas the green/white are more suitable for shady areas? Is this correct? Any species recommendations?

Need a perennial shade flower for zone 5?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Question by Jenn: Need a perennial shade flower for zone 5?
I have a small flower bed in my backyard that I would like to plant a perennial flower, in a shaded area. It’s not large enough for a hosta and I’m stumped. I’ve been putting annuals in it, but I want something that will come back and flower for most of the summer. Any suggestions? The bed is ten feet long, but only about six inches wide.

Jenn – there aren’t too many perennials that bloom “most of the summer”, especially those that do well in the shade. How about something that has foliage impact, like painted ferns?

What type of Hosta is this?

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Question by : What type of Hosta is this?
My mom has tons of Hostas. Just about every single color of them. She loves them. But, most recently, my dad accidentally killed one of the types that she only had one of with the tractor. Her birthday is coming up, and I’d like to buy another for her. The only problems are: A) I have no idea where to buy Hostas, and B) I don’t know what type it is.

So, does anyone know where I can buy Hostas and what type this is? Thanks much!
