Question by Dinosaur: I have 6 Spiraea shrubs, 2 are 4 ft wide & look great, the other 4 are not even 1 ft wide. What do I do?
We have central landscaping area in front of our home along our home’s walkway that these 6 Spiraea shrubs are located at leading to our front door. In this landscaped area we have these shrubs, 3 hosta’s, 1 small crabapple tree and 6 green bushes. The Spiraea’s are on the left outer edge of the walkway, then we have a crabapple tree in the middle along with 3 hosts plants around the tree. On the right side towards our home and garage we have 6 green bushes that were planted by the previous owner as well.

Will this keep the deer out of my hostas?

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

Question by local drifter: Will this keep the deer out of my hostas?
I want to cut some barberry stems (very thorny) and put them on top of the hosta leaves. Maybe the deer will get stickered and decide to leave them alone.

Question by Kitty: Sick Hosta: It looks burned at the edges and has reddish spots, any ideas? (Photo)?
Hosta

My hosta has recently started to look ill. It is shriveling up, looks burned but yet it has enough water and good soil. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this poor little thing and how to help it? I posted a link to photobucket with a picture of it. Thank you for any and all help/suggestions.

are hosta poisonous to dogs?

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Question by J & D: are hosta poisonous to dogs?
I suspect my 4 dogs have been eating/chewing on a hosta plant. Does anyone know for sure if hostas are poisonous? I am finding some toxic plant lists that say it is and some that say it is non-toxic. What would the symptoms of an ingestion be? Gastroenteritis? Diarrhea? Vomiting? My babies have had some diarrhea and hubbie caught them playing around the hosta and hiding under it as well as chewing it. This is the only thing that we can think of that could be causing their identical symptoms. Our puppies are on a different diet than our older dogs, so there are no similarities there to explain.

Suggestions for companion plants/underplanting for Japanese Maple ‘Bloodgood’?

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Question by blue_eyed_girl: Suggestions for companion plants/underplanting for Japanese Maple ‘Bloodgood’?
Southern exposure, but gets dappled shade. Trying to decide between companion plants that are “blue” – spruce, catmint, etc. or chartreuse – hosta, creeping jenny, etc.

Any thoughts? This is for a front landscaping. Thank you! Oh, Zone 5. 🙂

I have a Japanese maple in my front lawn right now, it’s a nice contrast to the other neighbors who have green trees.
