You can grow hostas as an indoor plant, but you need to keep them in cool conditions, out of direct sunlight. Hostas, prefer loose, well drained soil. Add some compost and mix well. That should do fine for the container you put them in.

I have a few plants that are crowded and I would like to spread them throughout my yard. They make beautiful edging plants and thrive very nicley in my Zone 5 area. However, I’ve never done this before and would hate to kill my huge Hostas.

Hosta are very hardy. They don’t mind being disturbed like some plants. When you dig them up you’ll clearly see individual rhizomes (swollen parts of the root) which you’ll be able to pry apart and plant elsewhere. You’ll actually be doing them a favor by eliminating overcrowding.
